Demand for Information Tech
Workers to Exceed Supply
CHICAGO (Reuters) -
Information technology professionals will be highly sought after
in the next 12 months and hiring managers foresee a shortfall of
almost 850,000 skilled workers, a new study said on Monday.
A survey by the Information Technology Association of America
disclosed that about 1.6 million IT workers will be in demand
over the next year in addition to the current workforce of 10
million.
Companies will seek to fill over 600,000 technical support
positions alone.
The ITAA said firms are also seeking database developers,
administrators and programmers.
Study results were based on a random sample of 700 IT managers.
``IT workers represent a much bigger slice of the total
workforce than previously imagined,'' ITAA President Harris
Miller said. ``The nation's economic future is tied to the
availability of appropriately skilled workers.''
The study also found that 84 percent of the managers surveyed
rate on-the-job training as more effective than pre-hire
training and 62 percent of them said ``a good knowledge in the
relevant area'' was the most important pre-hire skill desired.
Attending four-year colleges and private technical institutes
were rated the highest overall among pre-hire skill acquisition
methods, but short courses and seminars were also rated highly
for specific positions.
